After India's defeat in the first Test match against New Zealand in Bengaluru, captain Rohit Sharma shared his thoughts on the game. The match, which saw India trailing by a significant margin after a poor first innings, ended with New Zealand winning by eight wickets, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Speaking about the performance, Rohit Sharma admitted the team's shortcomings, especially in the first innings. He said, "We batted well in the second innings, but we didn't play up to the mark in the first. When you're 350 runs behind, there's not much you can do. However, credit to Rishabh and Sarfaraz for their efforts. New Zealand played brilliantly throughout the match."
Sharma emphasized the importance of accumulating runs in the second innings, knowing the uphill task ahead. "We knew what was coming next, which is why we had to score as many runs as possible. Though we could have been bowled out for less than 350 runs in the second innings, we managed to put up a fight," he remarked.
I didn't expect us to be bowled out for just 46: Rohit
Reflecting on the dismal first innings, where India was all out for just 46 runs, Rohit expressed his surprise but acknowledged New Zealand's dominance. "I didn't expect us to be bowled out for just 46 runs. But full credit goes to New Zealand for their exceptional bowling. We still have two matches left in the series, and we'll give our best in them," Sharma said, looking ahead to the remaining games.
I also wanted to bat first: Latham
On the other side, New Zealand captain Tom Latham was delighted with his team's performance. Commenting on the toss, Latham admitted, "I also wanted to bat first, but losing the toss worked in our favor. Our bowlers did a great job in the first innings and were rewarded for their discipline. India is a strong team, and we knew we had to perform at our best."
New Zealand's victory came after they chased down a modest target of 107 runs on the final day. With this win, they secured an early lead in the series. The second Test is scheduled to take place in Pune from October 24, followed by the third match in Mumbai on November 1.
India will be looking to bounce back and level the series as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
