In a tragic incident on Tuesday, three of the four workers trapped after the collapse of an under-construction structure for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project near Vasad in Anand district have died. One person was rescued and is currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.
The collapse occurred around 5 PM near the Mahi River when a temporary structure made of steel and concrete blocks, used for foundation work, gave way at the construction site.
"Three workers have died in this incident. Two workers were initially taken to the hospital for treatment, but one succumbed to injuries. Another worker trapped in the debris was also found dead. The surviving worker is presently receiving care in the hospital," stated Anand district superintendent of police Gaurav Jasani to the media.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), responsible for the project, confirmed that four laborers were trapped between concrete blocks. Emergency response teams, including police and fire brigade officials, promptly arrived at the scene following the collapse.
Second fatal accident in recent months
This incident marks the second fatal accident at the bullet train project site in recent months. In August, one laborer lost his life, and at least six others were injured when a construction crane collapsed near Kambola village in Vadodara district.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor, India's first bullet train project, spans 508 kilometers and aims to operate trains at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour. The project utilizes Japanese Shinkansen technology and seeks to reduce travel time between the two cities from six hours to approximately two hours.
Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw previously announced at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 that high-speed train operations are expected to commence between Surat and Billimora in South Gujarat by 2026.
