Remembering Helena Luke: Actress, Ex-wife of Mithun Chakraborty, Passes Away


Helena Luke, an actress known for her brief yet memorable career in Bollywood and as the first wife of renowned actor-politician Mithun Chakraborty, passed away in the United States on November 3. The cause of her death remains undisclosed. Helena garnered attention for her role as a British queen in the 1985 blockbuster Mard, starring Amitabh Bachchan. Her marriage to Mithun Chakraborty was brief, lasting only four months, before he went on to marry actress Yogeeta Bali later that same year.


Helena's Final Message on Social Media


In what turned out to be her last post on Facebook, Helena expressed feelings of confusion and emotional conflict, writing, "Feeling weird. Mixed emotions and no idea why, discombobulated (sic)." Her passing was confirmed by her close friend, dancer, and actor Kalpana Iyer, who shared the sad news with fans and friends through social media.


Life Beyond Bollywood: Transition to the US


After a short-lived career in Bollywood, Helena moved to the United States, where she pivoted to a career in the airline industry. Although her time in Hindi cinema was brief, her roles have left a lasting impression on audiences who remember her unique presence and performances. Her decision to relocate and build a life away from the film industry marked a significant shift, symbolizing a personal journey beyond the Bollywood spotlight.


Mithun’s Continued Legacy in Cinema


While Helena’s passing has brought her memory back into focus, her former husband Mithun Chakraborty continues to be celebrated for his contributions to Indian cinema. Recently, he received the prestigious 54th Dadasaheb Phalke Award, an esteemed lifetime achievement honor recognizing his significant impact on the industry.


Earlier in the year, Mithun faced a health scare after experiencing chest pain, which led to his hospitalization at Apollo Hospital in Kolkata. Diagnosed with an ischemic cerebrovascular accident, he has since recovered and remains active in the film industry. His latest work includes the Bengali film Kabuliwala, directed by Suman Ghosh and released in December 2023.


In addition to the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Mithun has also been honored with the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award, acknowledging his enduring contributions to Indian cinema.
