IPL Auction 2025: Why Did Deepak Chahar Say, 'I Will Miss Mahi Bhai'

In a significant development at the IPL auction 2025, Mumbai Indians (MI) acquired Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) long-time pacer Deepak Chahar for a substantial ₹9.25 crore. The move marks the end of Chahar’s association with CSK, where he had not only become a key part of their bowling attack but also forged a close bond with team captain MS Dhoni.

Chahar, known for his all-round abilities and his effectiveness in the powerplay, expressed mixed feelings after joining MI, mentioning that he will miss his "Mahi Bhai."

A Strong Acquisition for Mumbai Indians

Deepak Chahar’s switch to Mumbai Indians is noteworthy, given that he has been one of CSK's most reliable bowlers, contributing to their multiple IPL titles. In his IPL career so far, Chahar has taken 77 wickets in 81 matches, showcasing his ability to deliver strong performances, particularly with the new ball in the powerplay overs. His addition to MI strengthens an already formidable pace attack, which includes star bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult.

Chahar’s inclusion in MI signals the franchise’s focus on bolstering their fast-bowling lineup. With his fitness improving over the past year, he looks set to add depth to MI’s squad, especially given his ability to chip in with the bat in the lower order.

Chahar’s Bond with Dhoni

Deepak Chahar has been a part of CSK for many years, playing a pivotal role under the mentorship of MS Dhoni. Dhoni's strategic use of Chahar in the powerplay helped maximize his strengths, allowing him to bowl with freedom and aggression early in the innings. This partnership contributed significantly to CSK’s success over the years, making Chahar one of the team’s standout players.

Reflecting on his time with CSK, Chahar shared his appreciation for Dhoni’s guidance. Known for his impressive spells with the new ball, Chahar’s performances have often set the tone for CSK’s bowling innings. His transition to Mumbai Indians marks the end of an era with CSK, where he played a crucial role in their achievements, helping them secure several IPL championships.

Chahar acknowledges his strong connection with CSK

After the auction, Chahar spoke candidly about the transition, acknowledging his strong connection with CSK and his desire to continue there. However, he expressed optimism about joining MI, a franchise that has also won five IPL titles. "I wanted to play for Chennai, but it’s good to go from one big franchise to another," Chahar remarked. "I will miss Dhoni Bhai, but I am looking forward to this new chapter with Mumbai."

Chahar also highlighted his excitement about playing on Mumbai's pitch, which generally favors fast bowlers. His comments suggest that he is ready to adapt and eager to make a positive impact on MI’s fast-bowling lineup. “Mumbai’s wicket is a bit helpful for fast bowlers,” he said, expressing enthusiasm about the conditions at MI's home ground.
