Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren held several public meetings across the state on Sunday, where he addressed various local issues and criticized the policies proposed by the BJP. He underscored his government’s commitment to the welfare of the people of Jharkhand, especially regarding education and support for local laws.
In Ghaghra, Soren compared Jharkhand's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic to that of neighboring states, stating, “The situation in Jharkhand did not deteriorate during the corona epidemic. In contrast, people were dying in large numbers in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.” He suggested that Jharkhand's relatively stable response to the crisis was a result of the state's leadership and careful planning.
While speaking in Gumla, Soren took a firm stand against the BJP's push for policies like the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). “The BJP says they will implement NRC and UCC, but we have said that neither of these will work here,” he declared. Instead, he emphasized that Jharkhand will continue to uphold its local laws—the CNT (Chhota Nagpur Tenancy) Act, SPT (Santhal Pargana Tenancy) Act, and the PESA (Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act—which aim to protect indigenous communities and their land rights.
The CM said, "We have supported lakhs of our government employees in their old age through the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
He further stated, 'The Sarna Adivasi Dharma Code is our identity. If a society with a smaller population than the Adivasi community can have its own code, why can't we? The Adivasi community will continue to assert its rights.'"
Education Initiatives
Addressing the importance of education, Soren encouraged parents to support their children’s aspirations to become professionals such as doctors, engineers, journalists, and lawyers, noting that these pursuits require significant financial investment. To ease this financial burden, he highlighted the state's recently launched Guruji Student Credit Card Scheme. “All students should take advantage of this card,” Soren urged, explaining that it will help cover costly educational expenses.
He assured the public that the card could be used for financial assistance when students pursue admissions in competitive fields. “If you need lakhs of rupees for studies, take the Guruji Student Credit Card to the bank. In five minutes, you will get the funds you need to continue your education,” Soren promised, emphasizing the state’s commitment to making higher education accessible to Jharkhand’s youth.
