On December 6, Uttar Pradesh marks the 32nd anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition, coinciding with Friday prayers (Juma Namaz). This confluence of events has prompted the state police to heighten security, especially in sensitive regions such as Ayodhya, Mathura-Kashi, Sambhal, and Saharanpur. Following the Sambhal violence on November 24, which resulted in fatalities and injuries, vigilance across the state has been intensified to ensure peace and order.
Security Measures Across UP
To maintain law and order, significant police deployment has been arranged in key areas. In Ayodhya, Mathura-Kashi, and Saharanpur, a substantial police force has been stationed since early morning. Specific measures in Sambhal include monitoring Friday prayers at the Shahi Jama Masjid with drone surveillance. The prayers, scheduled for 1:30 PM, are under the watchful eyes of 10 companies of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), alongside local police.
Additionally, in adherence to Supreme Court directives, more than 10 loudspeakers from various religious places across the state were removed, while the sound levels of 50 others were regulated. These steps aim to reduce tensions and prevent disturbances during such a sensitive day.
Monitoring Social Media
In parallel, the Uttar Pradesh Police have intensified their watch on social media platforms to counter the spread of objectionable content. Teams have been on high alert since the previous night, prepared to act swiftly against any provocative messages, videos, or images that could incite unrest. The authorities have issued a clear warning that perpetrators will face immediate action.
Remembering the Sambhal Incident
Sambhal remains a focal point for security after the violent clashes on November 24 following a survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The violence left five people dead and 20 policemen injured, highlighting the fragility of communal harmony in the region. Today’s heightened measures are a direct response to that unrest, aiming to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
The date carries profound historical significance. On December 6, 1992, a large crowd gathered in Ayodhya to symbolically lay the foundation of the Ram Mandir ended up demolishing the Babri Masjid, which stood on the disputed site.
As the grand Ram temple nears completion on the site of Ram Janmabhoomi, the memories of the Babri Masjid demolition remain a deeply sensitive issue. Authorities are mindful of the potential for tensions, particularly on such anniversaries.
