The mortal remains of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have been brought to Nigambodh Ghat in Delhi. The last rites will be performed with state honours in a short while. The three armies saluted Manmohan Singh's mortal remains.
The mortal remains were brought to Nigambodh Ghat in an army gun carriage. Rahul Gandhi was sitting in the vehicle with the mortal remains. President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to Manmohan. PM Modi and Home Minister Shah have reached the ghat.
Manmohan's mortal remains were brought from his residence to the Congress headquarters at 9:30 am. Here Dr Singh's wife Gursharan Kaur and daughter Daman Singh paid tribute to him. Apart from Rahul Gandhi, Sonia and Priyanka, other Congress leaders also paid their last respects to Manmohan Singh.
The Congress has expressed displeasure over Manmohan Singh's funeral at Nigambodh Ghat. KC Venugopal said - The government could not even find land to build a memorial for the former PM. This is an insult to the country's first Sikh PM.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had demanded from Modi-Shah that a memorial should be built at the place where Manmohan Singh is cremated. However, the Home Ministry said late at night that it may take a few days to decide the exact location of the memorial.
The government has issued a clarification in this regard. An official statement said: Government received a request to allocate space for a memorial for former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh, from the Congress Party President.
The statement said further: Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, HM Shri Amit Shah communicated to Congress President Shri Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial. In the meanwhile cremation and other formalities can happen because a trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it.
Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday night.
