A BEST bus crushed around 30 people in Kurla, Mumbai. Four died and 26 people are injured. The accident took place in Ambedkar Nagar on Kurla West Railway Station Road.
The bus was on way from Kurla station to Andheri. This BEST bus runs under BMC. The injured have been admitted to Sion and Kurla Bhabha.
The uncontrolled BEST bus has also damaged several vehicles. The exact reason for the accident is not yet clear. The police have taken the bus driver into custody.
After the accident, a huge crowd gathered at the spot, which created an atmosphere of chaos. The local police took immediate action and took the bus driver into custody. Fire brigade and ambulance teams reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue work. The police have started investigating the matter.
Locals helped in rescue
After the incident, the local people immediately started taking the injured to the nearby Bhabha Hospital. Police and fire brigade teams also reached the spot. According to the police, more than 25 people have been injured, who are being treated at Bhabha Hospital and other places.
After the bus accident, an eyewitness said he was on way to the the railway station. He saw the bus swaying. He said he rushed to the spot and saw that a BEST bus had hit pedestrians, autorickshaws and other vehicles including three cars. I saw some dead bodies in front of my eyes.
We rescued the passengers and took them in autorickshaws to Bhabha Hospital. My friends also helped in providing relief to the injured, he said.
Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande said, the brakes of a bus leaving from Kurla station failed and the driver lost control of the bus. The driver panicked and instead of pressing the brake, he pressed the accelerator, due to which the speed of the bus increased. He could not control the bus and crushed 30-35 people. 4 people died, Another 4 people are in critical condition.
Another official of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) said that the bus was a 12-meter long electric bus manufactured by Olectra and BEST had taken it on wet lease. He said that drivers of such buses are provided by private operators. An RTO official said, the bus is just three months old. It has been registered in the name of a company called EVEY Trans on August 20 this year.
