Recent reports have emerged regarding Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, with speculation suggesting that his plane may have crashed or been shot down by rebels while attempting to flee Damascus. According to Flightradar24.com, an Ilyushin Il-76T aircraft belonging to Syrian Air, which took off from Damascus, abruptly vanished from radar.
Flight Details
Initially, the flight headed towards Syria's coastal region but soon changed course, flying over rebel-controlled territory in Homs. During this segment, the aircraft's altitude dramatically decreased from 3,650 meters to 1,070 meters, after which radar contact was lost.
Experts have indicated that this incident could be attributed to either a technical malfunction or a targeted attack. Flightradar24 has also mentioned potential data discrepancies due to GPS jamming in the area and the use of outdated transponders.
Concerns for Bashar al-Assad's Safety
As of now, there has been no official confirmation regarding the passengers on board the plane. However, Reuters has cited Syrian sources suggesting a "high possibility" that Assad may have perished in this event. A Syrian journalist has claimed that the 3D flight data indicates the plane was intentionally targeted.
Escalating Rebel Influence
The conflict between rebel forces and the Syrian army, which escalated on November 27, has reached alarming levels. By December 1, rebels had taken control of Aleppo and subsequently captured Homs and Daraa. Daraa, located just 90 kilometers from Damascus, is now under rebel control, with fighters seen openly celebrating in various cities, including Homs and Daraa, as they assert their dominance over the Assad government.
