The eagerly awaited day of Mahakumbh has finally arrived, with the bathing festival of Mauni Amavasya set to take place on 29 January. A massive crowd has already gathered in Prayagraj, leading to a 15-kilometer traffic jam, and numbers are expected to rise further as the festival approaches. In response, the government is making extensive preparations to manage the influx of devotees.
On this auspicious occasion, the Yogi Adityanath government plans to warmly welcome around 100 million attendees with a spectacular flower shower. According to officials from the Uttar Pradesh government, rose petals will cascade from above, adding a divine essence to the Amrit Snan festival and elevating the spiritual atmosphere.
An enchanting experience for devotees
The flower shower, or Pushpavarsha, will occur at all ghats, with 5 to 6 rounds scheduled throughout the day. The first shower is set to commence between 6:30 am and 7:00 am, promising an enchanting experience for devotees during the sacred Amrit bath.
25 quintals of rose petals to be showered
To accommodate the anticipated crowd, the Yogi government has prepared 25 quintals of rose petals, with an additional five quintals reserved for extra showers if necessary. Krishna Mohan Chaudhary, Deputy Director of Horticulture for Prayagraj Division, emphasized that the extra petals will ensure the event's success, allowing for additional Pushpavarsha as needed.
VK Singh, in charge of Pushpavarsha for the Maha Kumbh, noted that the sight of rose petals falling from the sky will create a remarkable scene, enhancing the spiritual energy of the festival.
Singh further explained that each round of petals has been meticulously prepared to provide an unforgettable experience for the devotees. The gesture of showering rose petals symbolizes respect and reverence, ensuring that the festival remains a memorable and spiritually uplifting occasion for millions attending Maha Kumbh 2025.
Mauni Amavasya, marking the second Shahi Snan, is expected to attract a crowd of 80-100 million people. Other significant bathing dates during the Maha Kumbh include February 3 (Basant Panchami - Third Shahi Snan), February 12 (Maghi Purnima), and February 26 (Maha Shivaratri). The Maha Kumbh, celebrated every 12 years, is anticipated to draw over 450 million visitors to Prayagraj from January 13 to February 26, making this a historic event for India.
