In Chhattisgarh's Gariaband district, a fierce encounter between the Naxalites and the security forces has been going on for the last two days. It is reported that more than a thousand jawans have surrounded a group of 60 dreaded Naxalites.
By 12 noon on Tuesday, around two dozen Naxalites have been killed, although the police have confirmed the killing of 20 Naxalites along with Central Committee member Jairam alias Chalpati, who carries a reward of Rs 1 crore on his head. According to sources, the way the jawans are moving forward while surrounding this group of Naxalites, it seems that all 60 Naxalites will be killed.
Home Minister Amit Shah has reacted to the claim of security forces that 14 Maoists were killed in Chhattisgarh.
Amit Shah has written in a social media post, "Another blow to Naxalism. Our security forces have achieved a major success towards making 'Naxal Mukt Bharat'."
According to him, "CRPF, Special Operation Group of Odisha Police and Chhattisgarh Police have eliminated 14 Naxalites on the Odisha-Chhattisgarh border in a joint operation."
"With our resolve for a Naxal-free India and the joint action of the security forces, Naxalism is counting its last breaths."
The encounter took place in the Bhaludigi and Tarjhar forests of Kulhadighat in Gariaband, which is adjacent to Odisha's Nuapada district.
According to a police officer, Odisha Police's Special Operation Group, CRPF's 'Cobra Battalion' and Chhattisgarh Police personnel had left for the operation on Sunday itself, where they had an encounter with suspected Maoists late at night.
A senior police officer told, "We have found a large quantity of sophisticated weapons. The search operation is still going on. The number of Maoists killed may increase."
Some of the Maoists killed have been identified as senior members of the Maoist organization active in Odisha. However, the police have not confirmed this.
A jawan of the Cobra Battalion has also been shot in this encounter. However, his condition is out of danger. A major campaign has been going on against the Maoists in Chhattisgarh for the last one year. In the year 2024, the security forces claimed to have killed 219 Maoists in the state.
