Raipur: Congress leader and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel slammed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at the residence of veteran Congress leader Kawasi Lakhma on Thursday. He said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had been acting out of "political jealousy."
Baghel said out that the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed an FIR two years ago, but no charge-sheet has been presented. It is clear that the BJP is trying to tarnish the reputations of political parties and their leaders.
Earlier in the week, the ED claimed that Kawasi Lakhma, a senior Congress leader and former Excise Minister, had received huge sums monthly from the proceeds of an alleged liquor scam estimated at around Rs 2,161 crore.
ED probe indicated that Lakhma was the primary recipient of illicit funds
The ED's probe indicated that Lakhma was the primary recipient of these illicit funds during his time as Excise Minister in the previous Congress-led state government. The investigation into the liquor scam, which reportedly occurred between 2019 and 2022, suggested that the proceeds were generated through illegal commissions obtained via various methods.
In the searches conducted on December 28, the ED raided the residential premises of Kawasi Lakhma, a six-time Congress MLA. The residential premises of his son Harish Lakhma and his close associates were also raided. The ED said that as a result of the search operation, it has been able to gather evidence about the use of proceeds of crime in cash by Kawasi Lakhma during the relevant period of the scam.
