Sheesh Mahal Controversy: Delhi CM Bungalow Controversy: Dramatic scenes unfolded today outside the residence of Delhi's Chief Minister as leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reached to counter the BJP allegations regarding the alleged luxurious furnishings to the CM's bungalow at 6, Flagstaff Road.
As the BJP intensifies its campaign for the upcoming Delhi elections-2025, it has alleged AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal misused public funds for extravagant renovations. In response, AAP leaders announced their plan to invite the media to see the bungalow. They then planned to proceed to the Prime Minister's residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg to show the renovations there.
When AAP MP Sanjay Singh and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj attempted to access the bungalow accompanied by journalists, police intervened. Cops said AAP leaders were stopped over law and order. Singh said stopping them from entering the bungalow constituted a breach of privilege for an MP and a cabinet minister.
Why can't we be allowed inside: Sanjay Singh
"Why can't we be allowed inside? The BJP is spreading misinformation about golden toilets and swimming pools; let us show the media the truth," Singh stated.
Bharadwaj queried the authority under which they were being stopped. He said that only the Lieutenant Governor had the jurisdiction to issue such orders.
Singh accused the BJP of lying. He said, "For months, they have claimed there are lavish amenities here. We are not terrorists; why are we being prevented from entering? If the BJP is truthful, they should allow us to enter the CM's residence."
Later, AAP leaders attempted to visit the Prime Minister's residence but were again halted.
Official residence of Delhi CM has remained vacant
The official residence of the Delhi Chief Minister has remained vacant since Kejriwal resigned following bail in a corruption case linked to the now-defunct liquor policy. Kejriwal has stated he will only return to office after a verdict from the "people's court."
The BJP has been aggressively attacking AAP, particularly using the term 'Sheesh Mahal' to describe the CM's residence. A recent report from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) highlighted a big discrepancy between the budgeted and actual costs of the renovations, providing the BJP with additional ammunition.
