New Delhi: The Supreme Court is set to hear Asaduddin Owaisi's petition regarding the temple-mosque dispute today, January 2. This petition includes a request for the strict enforcement of the Places of Worship Act, 1991. This law calls for maintaining the religious character of a place as it was on August 15, 1947.
'All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen' (AIMIM) chief and MP Owaisi filed a petition on December 17, 2024 through lawyer Fuzail Ahmed Ayyubi.
Earlier, a bench headed by CJI Sanjeev Khanna, while acting on similar petitions against the 1991 law, had barred all courts from considering new cases related to reclaiming religious places and passing any interim or final order in pending cases.
Significantly, the Places of Worship Act, 1991 prohibits changing the religious character of any place of worship and provides for maintaining it as it was on August 15, 1947.
In this regard, the lawyer of AIMIM chief and MP Owaisi also mentioned instances where several courts had ordered a survey of mosques on the petition of Hindu litigants. It is likely that the apex court will attach Owaisi's petition with pending cases for hearing on January 2.
