Earthquake tremors were felt in Nepal this morning, with India's National Center for Seismology reporting a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale. The tremors were also experienced in Bihar and northern areas of West Bengal. Many residents in Siliguri to share their experiences.
A magnitude of 5.5 is considered moderate, with potential for minor effects near the epicenter, such as shaking or cracking of buildings.
The earthquake occurred at approximately 2:36 AM on Friday, with its epicenter located near Bhairav Kund in Sindhupalchowk, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Local officials from the Sindhupalchowk district have reported no loss of life or property thus far. However, Assistant Chief District Officer Ganesh Nepali informed that a prisoner sustained minor injuries after panicking during the quake at the district jail.
Residents in Bihar's capital, Patna, and surrounding areas also felt the tremors, leading to moments of panic. Videos shared on social media showed buildings and ceiling fans shaking, with one user claiming the tremors lasted for about 35 seconds.
In addition, an earthquake of 5.0 magnitude was recorded in Morigaon district of Assam at 2:25 AM, but there have been no reports of damage or casualties from that incident either. Tremors were also reported in Indonesia.
Following the events in Nepal and Bihar, an earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was felt in Pakistan at 5:14 AM, with no reports of damage reported so far. Recently, Kolkata experienced a 5.1 magnitude earthquake, raising concerns in the region. It is important to note that in January, a significant earthquake of 7.1 magnitude struck the Himalayan region of Tibet, resulting in over 125 fatalities.
