Bangla Ghat: Why Devotees Flock to This Sacred and Mysterious Maratha-Era Shrine in the Heart of Betwa River?

Bangla Ghat, a remarkable and mythological site, is located in the middle of the Betwa River in the Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh. Here, a Shivling and Nandi Maharaj are seated on a platform that has remained steadfast despite the river's strong currents and floods for many years. This place holds significant historical, religious, and natural importance.

Site was established by the Marathas in the 18th century

The history of Bangla Ghat dates back about 300 years, tied to the Maratha period. According to historian Advocate Govind Devaliya and local residents, the site was established by the Marathas in the 18th century, during the time of the Third Battle of Panipat (1761), when the Maratha army camped in Vidisha. Devotees of Shiva, the Maratha army constructed this temple for worship, and the Shivalinga here is known as the King of Bangla Ghat.

A bungalow once existed here

The name "Bangla Ghat" has an intriguing backstory. Historians suggest that a bungalow (guest house) once existed here, where the Maratha army would rest. Although the bungalow has since been washed away by the river's strong flow and floods, the Shivling remains firmly established.

Site transformed into a center of religious faith

For many years, Bangla Ghat remained deserted as people avoided the area due to its dense forest and water. However, since 2020, local efforts have revived interest in this sacred site, transforming it into a center of religious faith.

Grand events are held here during Mahashivratri

Grand events are now held here during Mahashivratri, attracting visitors from far and wide. During the rainy season, the Betwa River swells, submerging the Shivling and making it impossible for devotees to have darshan of Lord Bholenath. Due to safety concerns, the administration has prohibited public access to the river on normal days.

Rajkumar Prajapati, a member of the Bangla Ghat Seva Samiti, states, "The importance of this place has now spread throughout Vidisha and Madhya Pradesh. A grand program is organized here on Mahashivratri, drawing devotees from afar who come to participate and seek blessings from Bholenath. The festival now sees a surge of visitors from morning until night, establishing Bangla Ghat as a significant pilgrimage site."
