Dispute Over 600-Year-Old Idgah in Surat Reaches Gujarat High Court

Ahmedabad: After the dispute over Aurangzeb's tomb in Maharashtra, the conflict surrounding the 600-year-old Idgah in Surat, Gujarat, has escalated to the High Court. A petition has been filed by a particular community challenging the transfer of the old Idgah land to Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited (GETCL). Following a heated debate between the involved parties, the Gujarat High Court has scheduled the next hearing for March 26.

The petitioner's advocate said that with Eid approaching, a large number of people from the Muslim community are expected to gather at the Idgah. Therefore, he requested that the hearing be postponed until after Eid. However, the court responded that there is ample space around the Idgah, suggesting that the gathering would not pose an issue.

During the proceedings, the advocate for the Muslim community emphasized the historical significance of the Idgah. He said that it is a 600-year-old structure and one of the major religious buildings in the state. He argued that any damage to the Idgah would be unacceptable and could hurt the religious sentiments of the community.

Tensions arose as the lawyers for both sides clashed in court. The petitioner's advocate accused the government lawyer of misrepresenting the case, leading to a heated exchange.

The High Court intervened, urging both parties to remain calm and reminding them that the case is still under consideration. The court assured that no unnecessary damage would occur to the building and that any ongoing construction would be conducted safely and responsibly.

During the hearing of the case, the government lawyer said that it has been said in the petition that the building can be damaged due to the construction work. He said that there is no need to look at the matter from a religious point of view. It should be taken normally.
