IPL 2025: Why all eyes are on Mahendra Singh Dhoni?

With the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, all eyes are on Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who despite retiring from international cricket in 2020, maintains his status as a 'superstar' in Indian cricket.

Dhoni is a key player in the world's richest cricket league. Along with him in the IPL, there are legends like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as well as stars like fast bowlers Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant.

Still, it is Dhoni who continues to keep the attention of the fans on him with his leadership and presence in the league.

Dhoni, who will turn 44 in July, is playing in the 18th season of the IPL. Out of this, he has played 16 seasons for Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

He is the oldest player in the tournament this year, although not the oldest player to play in the history of the IPL.

Australian spin bowler Brad Hogg was 45 years and 92 days old when he played his last IPL match in 2016 while captaining Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Leg-spinner Pravin Tambe was the oldest player to debut for Rajasthan Royals at the age of 41 years and 212 days. He played his last match in the 2019 season at the age of 44 years and 219 days and ended his illustrious career.

It remains to be seen whether Dhoni will be able to surpass Tambe and Hogg. Three seasons ago, when he left the captaincy of CSK, it seemed that he would retire. His performance last year also indicated the same.
