Israeli tourist, homestay owner gangraped in Karnataka: Two accused arrested


A 27-year-old Israeli female tourist and a home-stay owner were gangraped by three men in Karnataka's famous tourist place Hampi. The incident took place on the banks of the Tungabhadra canal at around 10:30 pm on March 6. The victim women were sitting on the banks of the canal.


There were three other tourists with the women. One of them, Daniel, was from America, while the other two, Pankaj, was from Maharashtra and Bibash was from Odisha. The accused had pushed these three into the canal before the gangrape. Daniel and Pankaj swam out, while Bibash died due to drowning.


2 of 3 accused arrested


Koppal Superintendent of Police Ram L Arasiddi said that two of the three accused have been arrested and efforts are being made to nab the third suspect in the case. The SP said that the arrested accused have been identified as Mallesh and Chetan Sai. Both are around 21 years old and residents of Sai Nagar in Gangavathi town. Both the accused work as mason.


Police began rescue operation on March 7 morning  


The police started a rescue operation on the morning of March 7 to find Bibash from Odisha. Apart from the fire brigade, police and sniffer dogs were also deployed in it. However, there was no success in this. On March 8, i.e. this morning, Bibash's dead body was found on the banks of the canal. His body was sent to the government hospital for postmortem.


The 29-year-old woman, the owner of the homestay, told the police that after having dinner with her 4 guests, she went to watch the stars with music on the banks of the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal. Then 3 people came on a bike. First they asked where they could get petrol.


After this, they started demanding 100 rupees from the Israeli woman. When the tourist refused to give money, the accused attacked her. During this, when the three tourists came to intervene, these people pushed them into the canal. After this, they committed the gang rape and fled from there.


After the incident, the four first searched for Bibash who had drowned in the river. They then reached their homestay and informed the police about the incident. The police registered an FIR and sent the victims for medical test.


6 teams have been formed to nab the accused


Koppal SP R L Arasiddi said that 5 people were attacked near Sanapur. The women are admitted in a government hospital and their condition is improving.


He said that 6 teams have been formed to arrest the accused. An FIR has been filed against the accused under sections of murder, gang rape, robbery and attempt to murder. 


The complainant woman has said in her complaint that the accused were speaking Kannada and Telugu.


The police officers said that 'We are searching for the accused. We hope that we will find them by this evening.'
