Kolkata: The Student Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), called for a strike today i.e. on March 3, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Bratya Basu.
The students had gheraoed the minister while he was leaving the Jadavpur University campus and demanded immediate announcement of holding elections in the university. During this, he is being held responsible for the injury caused to two students.
In this regard, SFI state committee leader Shubhajit Sarkar had said on Sunday that the strike in university and college campuses has been called in protest against the entry of outsiders protected by TMC, who had committed violence and vandalism in the Jadavpur University campus on March 1.
Sarkar had said that, "Since the students only wanted to discuss with the Education Minister in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, he behaved very badly with the students and tried to leave the campus in anger last Saturday."
2 students were injured by minister's car: SFI
SFI state committee leader Shubhajit Sarkar had also said, “Since the students wanted to meet him, Basu got into a car with TMC goons and outsiders and his driver sped up the vehicle without caring for the safety and lives of the students. Two students were injured by his car, one of them is in a critical condition. He did not bother to look back but sped away.”
Sarkar had said, “Basu is responsible for the injuries to the two students and we demand his resignation from the state cabinet and police action against him for vitiating the atmosphere in the Jadavpur University campus.”
Sarkar, however, said that the SFI will assist in the smooth conduct of the Higher Secondary Examination starting today i.e. March 3 and will organise camps near the examination centres to help the examinees.
