Tech company Google has fired hundreds of employees from its Platforms and Devices Division. This team handles Android software, Pixel phones, and Chrome browser. This decision comes at a time when in January this year, the company launched a voluntary retirement program for the same unit.
Wave of layoffs after team merger
A Google spokesperson confirmed that since the merger of the Platforms and Devices teams last year, the company has been taking steps towards working with more agility and efficiency. "As part of this process, some positions have been abolished along with the already ongoing voluntary exit plan," the company said.
Although the company has not shared the exact number of affected employees, the move is being described as part of a strategy to reduce operational costs and simplify the structure.
Layoffs continue in the tech industry
Not only Google, many global companies like Amazon, Intel, and Goldman Sachs are also following the same path.
Amazon is planning to save $3 billion annually by abolishing about 14,000 managerial positions.
Intel is preparing for a major restructuring after heavy losses in 2024.
Goldman Sachs plans to lay off 3-5% of its employees after its annual performance evaluation.
Jobs under threat due to growing use of AI
