Jagdambika Pal, chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on the Waqf Amendment Bill, has slammed the stance of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka on Waqf Amendment Bill.
Jagdambika Pal said, "If this was an unconstitutional law, then Rahul Gandhi should have said clause by clause in the Parliament of the country that this section of the amendment is unconstitutional."
He said, "In the amendment of Waqf, Rahul Gandhi neither gave any suggestion, nor made any criticism nor any argument. Neither Priyanka gave any argument nor Sonia Gandhi gave any argument in the Rajya Sabha."
Jagdambika Pal has described the President's assent to the Waqf Amendment Bill as a historic and reformist step.
He sajd, "Whoever does Waqf, is called Waqif. Waqif's thinking was that those who make Waqf in the name of Allah, their income should help the poor, backward, women, children or the needy in education and health."
He said that Waqf was third in the country in terms of maximum property, yet it did not have any university, medical or engineering college. The caretaker of the Waqf Board used to get the benefit of this.
Jagdambika Pal said, "This in itself is a very big reformist step in the Waqf law."
The Waqf Amendment Bill has been passed by both the Houses of Parliament this week. This bill was passed in the Lok Sabha after midnight on Wednesday while in the Rajya Sabha it was passed on Thursday midnight.
The President has approved it late on Saturday night, after which this bill has now become a law.
