How will Indians be impactd if there is a ban on admission of foreign students at Harvard University ?

US President Donald Trump has revoked Harvard University's right to admit international students.

Harvard University filed a lawsuit against this decision of the Trump administration. In the lawsuit filed in Boston, the university called the administration's action a 'clear violation' of the law.

Hearing the case, US District Judge Alison Borrow has currently put a stay on the Trump administration's decision.

According to the Harvard University website, every year 500 to 800 Indians study at Harvard University.

In the current session, 10,158 international students from more than 140 countries are studying at the university. Among these, the number of Indian students is 788.

Atmosphere of concern

There is an atmosphere of concern for both the students seeking admission in Harvard and those studying in Harvard. The students who are currently studying there will no longer be able to study there as per the decision. They will have to take admission in some other university or Harvard will have to go to court and get a stay on it. However, the court's stay on the order of the Trump administration has come as a relief for the students.

Over 3000 Indian students took admission in Harvard in 3 years

In the academic session 2023-24, 824 Indian students were studying at Harvard. In the last five years, more than three thousand Indian students have taken admission in Harvard University.

University data shows that in the last academic year, more than 6,700 international students were enrolled in the institute, which is 27% of its total student population.

The fight will continue in the court, but what will happen to those students who have to take admission for the next semester in a few days? Because the matter may drag on in the court. The future of thousands of students is at stake.

Foreign students an important source of revenue

Foreign students are an important source of revenue in American universities. International students at Harvard have also contributed to the local economy.

Data from the Association of International Educators shows that international students spent US$38.4 crore in Harvard's academic session 2023-2024. While paying for accommodation, food and other services, these students have supported 3,900 jobs.
