The US Federal Appeals Court has temporarily stayed the order of the Manhattan-based US Court of International Trade, which declared President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs illegal.
The US court for international trade matters had ruled on Wednesday that the White House's emergency law does not give President Trump the right to impose tariffs on every country.
The Manhattan court had said that the US Constitution has given Congress (Parliament) specific powers to regulate trade with other countries and these cannot be violated for the President's 'intention to improve the economy'.
The Trump administration had appealed against this decision. In its appeal, the Trump administration said that the court's decision on trade matters has created a risk of failure of the trade talks going on for months.
The Trump administration said, "Foreign policy and economic policy are made by political branches, not the courts."
According to the interim order of the Federal Appeals Court, the Trump administration can continue to collect import taxes for now until the hearing is over. The next hearing in this case will be on June 5.
