What did the Supreme Court say now in the case of Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad?

The case of Professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad of Ashoka University was heard in the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The lawyer of the Haryana government said that a special investigation team has been formed and the matter is being investigated.

The Supreme Court extended till July the interim bail given to Ali Khan Mahmudabad, associate professor and head of the Political Science department at Ashoka University in Haryana, in relation to a social media post on Operation Sindoor.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta also restricted the scope of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the case lodged against Mahmudabad and said the probe should be limited to the two FIRs.

The bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Dipankar Dutta said, "We direct that the investigation of the SIT will be limited to the subject matter of the two FIRs."

The bench said this when Mahmudabad's lawyer Kapil Sibal expressed apprehension that the investigation could be used to look into things beyond the FIR.

The bench also told the lawyer appearing on behalf of the Haryana government that the scope of the investigation should not go further.

Kapil Sibal also said that the conditions imposed on Mahmudabad should be relaxed. The restrictions imposed on him include confiscation of his passport and not allowing him to speak on the India-Pakistan conflict.

But the bench refused to do so, saying he was free to speak on any subject other than this incident.

Mahmudabad's lawyer also said that the police was asking for the device from him.

The court asked the Haryana government, "Both the FIRs are on record. What is the need for the device? Do not try to expand the scope."

Last week, Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmoodabad was arrested for a social media post on 'Operation Sindoor'.
