What Nitin Gadkari said on collection of toll from two-wheelers

On Thursday, news about the imposition of a toll tax on two-wheelers began to go viral. This news caused concern among millions of Indians, who worried that the government would now take money from them through tolls even when traveling on two-wheelers. However, the truth behind this situation turned out to be different.

Nitin Gadkari clarified that two-wheelers will not be charged toll tax on national highways. He dismissed the misleading news reports. The exemption on toll for two-wheelers will continue.

After the news of toll tax being levied on two-wheelers came to light, people were shocked. The Opposition also started making it an issue. Pappu Yadav, MP from Purnia, Bihar, slammed the decision.

Pappu Yadav wrote in the Instagram post that the countrymen should go to the Prime Minister's house with their two-wheelers and surrender them to the fire. People should request the PM not to impose tax on walking. The whole country will abandon vehicles and walk on foot.

What Nitin Gadkari told?

When the news of toll tax being levied on bikes started spreading rapidly, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari himself came forward and called these reports false. He said that these reports are misleading and completely wrong.

Nitin Gadkari posted on his X handle and said, "Some media organizations are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheelers. No such decision is proposed. Toll exemption for two-wheelers will continue. Spreading misleading news without checking the truth to create sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn it."

At the same time, NHAI has also issued a statement on X handle regarding these reports. NHAI said, “There have been reports in a section of the media that the Government of India is planning to impose user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There is no plan to impose toll fee on two-wheelers."

In the viral report it was being claimed that NHAI is planning to collect toll from two-wheelers on all national highways from July 15, 2025. So far two-wheelers have been kept toll free on national highways.
