15% voters out in Bihar? Tejashwi Yadav writes to 35 leaders against special intensive revision by EC; letter sent to Rahul Gandhi, Mamata, Akhilesh, Kharge, others

Tejashwi Yadav letter against SIR: Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly Tejashwi Yadav has written a letter to 35 opposition leaders in protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign of the voter list being run by the Election Commission in Bihar.

Sharing a copy of the letter on the social networking site X, Tejashwi Yadav wrote in the caption, "Wrote a letter to 35 big leaders of different parties of the country against the attack on the right to vote and democracy under the guise of voter list revision by the Election Commission at the behest of the BJP government. We all will oppose this process together until it is transparent and inclusive."

Letter sent to Rahul, Mamata, Akhilesh, Kharge, others

The leaders to whom he has sent the copy of the letter include Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Tejashwi wrote in the letter, “The farce and tragedy of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision in Bihar is shaking the foundations of democracy by disenfranchising people on a massive scale. This is a clear indication of how an ‘independent body’ like the Election Commission of India is hell-bent on destroying public confidence in the integrity of our electoral process. Every person in this country, regardless of their background or status, takes pride in their vote. The ability to participate in the governance of the country is extremely empowering.

Unprecedented in the history of our country

He further wrote that lakhs of voters, for no fault of theirs, are being marginalised and humiliated. He further wrote that on July 16, the Election Commission said in a press note that about 4.5 per cent of the population has already been excluded from voting on the pretext of ‘voters not found at their addresses’. This is in addition to the four per cent who have “probably” died or have permanently moved. Based on these figures, it is estimated that the number of people disenfranchised is between 12 and 15 per cent. This is unprecedented in the history of our country.

Tejashwi Yadav further wrote in his letter that the Supreme Court has also said that the Election Commission has not done any favors to itself by announcing and implementing this process in a haphazard and arbitrary manner. They are not transparent. They are making and breaking their own rules. What is worse is that they are targeting everyone who demands transparency and accountability.
