US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (local time) that the US is working on an agreement to gain access to the Indian market.
Trump said about India - We are going to get access to the Indian market. Earlier we had no access to India. Our people were not able to do business there. Now we are gaining access through tariffs."
Trump also announced a new trade agreement with Indonesia. Under this, the US will impose a 19% tariff on goods coming from Indonesia.
Trump said that a trade agreement has been reached after talking to Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Under this agreement, Indonesia will not impose any tariff on American imports, while the US will impose 19% tariff on Indonesia's exports.
India working along same line as Indonesia
As the India-US trade talks are underway, Trump claimed that India is working along the same line as Indonesia.
Trump made this statement while going to Pennsylvania. During this time, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt was also present with him.
“We made a deal with Indonesia. I spoke to their really great president…and we made the deal. We have full access to Indonesia, everything. As you know, Indonesia is very strong on copper, but we have full access to everything. They are going to pay 19% and we will pay no tariffs. They are giving us access into Indonesia, which we never had. That’s probably the biggest part of the deal…India is basically working along that same line. We’re going to have access into India," Trump told reporters.
He said that under the deal, Indonesia will buy energy worth $15 billion, agricultural products worth $4.5 billion and 50 Boeing jets from the US.
