Delhi street dogs case will be heard again in Supreme Court today on Aug 14
A new bench of three judges of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Vikram Nath will hear the case related to Delhi steet dogs on Thursday. Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria will also be included in this bench.
This case was earlier being heard by a bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan.
This bench had ordered on August 11 that all stray dogs should be removed from the streets and public places in Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad and kept in dog shelters and a complete ban should be imposed on releasing them back.
The bench had said that this work should be given priority and should be completed without any compromise.
Justice Pardiwala's bench had also said on Monday that if any person or organization obstructs this process, the court will take strict action against them, including contempt.
Govt does not run any shelter for dogs: Activist
After this, animal rights activists had staged a massive protest against the order.
Animal rights activist Gauri Maulekhi had objected to the Supreme Court's order.
Gauri Maulekhi said, "At present, all the shelters in this country are run by animal welfare organizations. The government does not run any shelter for dogs. No government or local authority has the space or human resources to keep a single dog permanently and take care of them."
She further said, "The Supreme Court has given orders to create all these things from scratch, which are not only impractical but are also clearly against the Animal Birth Control Rules 2023 and science. The court did not consider the consequences of suddenly removing the dogs, because they refused to listen to any other party. It seemed as if the court had already made up its mind."
