Google has launched a new AI-powered live translation feature on its Translate platform. Google said it heard from users that the toughest skill to master was conversation — ie, learning to listen and speak with confidence. To that end, it's piloting a new language practice feature (on iOS or Android) targeted toward an individual's specific needs.
Why is this Feature Special?
Google's latest move directly competes with popular language learning apps like Duolingo. Now, Google Translate will function not just as a translation tool, but also as a language teacher. The standout aspect of this feature is its design for both beginner and advanced users.
Users can set their fluency level from Basic to Advanced, and the app will automatically create listening and speaking practice sessions tailored to their level and targets. A gamified approach has been adopted, allowing users to learn about 40 languages in an engaging manner.
How Does it Work?
For instance, if the app prompts you to “Ask about meal times,” you can listen to a simulated conversation and select the appropriate word. Additionally, you can practice speaking aloud. The app provides hints and real-time feedback during practice sessions. Your daily progress is tracked to facilitate continuous practice and ease of learning.
In Which Languages is it Available?
Currently, this feature is in beta version. In the initial phase, English speakers can learn Spanish and French, while Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers can learn English. This feature is accessible for free during the testing phase.

To access this feature, open the Google Translate app, select the option for Practice, set your skill level and goals, and begin learning.
