Uttarkashi: Temporary lake formed on Yamuna river in Syanachatti, houses and hotels evacuated
A temporary lake has formed in Yamuna river near Syanachatti town located on Yamunotri Dham road in Uttarkashi.
This temporary lake has been formed due to heavy amount of debris and water coming from Gadhgad at around 4.30 pm on Thursday evening. Waterlogging is continuously increasing due to lack of drainage.
The police have evacuated the nearby houses and hotels. Most of the houses and hotels built below the road are flooded. The administration has so far sent about 150 people to safe places.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate Prashant Arya told media, "There is a drain right in front of the river. That drain broke a lot today due to the sunshine. Due to which big stones and debris accumulated there."
He told, "Police, tehsil and revenue department teams are present on the spot. NDRF team will also reach the spot in some time. Apart from this, some boats are also being sent."
The DM said, "Due to the trees being stuck, the drainage of water is getting obstructed, for which two wood cutters have been sent. Some lights have also been sent there. Work will be done only if there is no risk in working at night, otherwise work will start from six o'clock tomorrow morning."
According to him, "There are many hotels and houses in Syanachatti, those people have shifted to their relatives' place upstairs."
