What Shashi Tharoor said on US imposing additional 25% tariff on India
The US has announced an additional 25 percent tariff on India. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has reacted to this.
Shashi Tharoor told media, "This is not good for us. This will increase our total tariff to 50 percent and our products will become expensive for many people in the US."
Tharoor said that this means that now we will have to turn very seriously to other countries and markets.
US President Donald Trump has said that the reason for imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on India is India's import of oil from Russia.
Shashi Tharoor said, "Uranium, palladium, there are many things that America is importing from Russia. There is a kind of double standard involved in this. They have given China a 90-day grace period, but China is importing more Russian oil than us."
He said, "We have to learn from this experience. I think there is definitely a possibility that now India will also be under pressure to impose a comparable reciprocal tariff on things coming from America."
India’s competitors will benefit
Tharoor said India’s competitors will benefit from these tariff regimes. He said, “When you're looking at these percentages, you have to compare them with the tariffs being levied on some of our competitors. If you look at people like Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, even Bangladesh and Pakistan have lower tariffs than us. Then ultimately, people will not be buying goods from us in America if they can buy them cheaper elsewhere. So that's not very good for our exports to America.”
