China introducing new "K-Visa" amidst rise in America's H-1B visa fees; is it a good option for those looking for work opportunities?
The US has raised the fee for the H-1B visa to about Rs 8.8 million. At the same time, China is introducing a new "K-Visa" for young people and skilled workers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), starting from October 1, 2025. This visa will allow applicants to apply even without a job offer from a Chinese company.
The US increased the H-1B visa fee on September 21, making it harder for professionals to move to the US. In contrast, China's K-Visa is seen as a good option for those looking for work opportunities.
Britain is considering removing the visa fee of Rs 90,000 for highly skilled persons. They may waive this fee for those who have studied at top universities or received major international awards. The current fee for Britain’s Global Talent Visa is about 766 pounds (around Rs 90,000), and changes could happen before the budget announcement on November 26.
K-Visa will allow longer stays and does not require a job offer
China currently offers 12 types of visas, including R-visas and Z-visas for work. Z-visas are valid for one year, while R-visas allow a 180-day stay. R-visas do not have a fee, but the application process is complicated. The new K-Visa will allow longer stays and does not require a job offer, unlike the Z-Visa, which needs sponsorship from a Chinese company.
Details about K-Visa fees are not yet available, but Z-Visa fees vary by country, with different costs for Indian, US, Canadian, and Australian citizens. There is also a service charge for the visa application process.
China has launched two programs to attract skilled workers
To attract skilled workers, China has launched two programs: the Talented Young Scientist Program for researchers up to 45 years old from Asia and Africa, and the Outstanding Young Scientist Fund Project for top scientists and engineers up to 40 years old. Chinese universities and research institutes are offering competitive salaries and bonuses to attract talent.
While, the US has made it more expensive to obtain an H-1B visa, while China is creating new visa opportunities for skilled workers.
