Elon Musk's AI company xAI lays off 500 employees; 20-year-old student to head AI chatbot Grok
Elon Musk's xAI: Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, recently laid off nearly 500 employees in a major retrenchment.
This move, which affects about one-third of the team's 1,500 members, targets generalist AI tutors responsible for labelling, contextualising, and categorising vast amounts of raw data to train xAI's flagship chatbot, Grok. The layoffs were communicated via an internal email.
Surprisingly, the company's crucial AI chatbot, Grok, is now headed by a 20-year-old student, Diego Pasini. Pasini graduated from high school in 2023 and is currently studying computer science and economics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Pasini assured that there would be no further layoffs
Passini began working at xAI just eight months after graduating high school. Currently on leave, Pasini now plays a key role within the company. According to reports, he was assigned a leadership role in early September and held his first meeting with the team on September 15. During this meeting, Pasini assured that there would be no further layoffs and discussed their responsibilities with all employees one-on-one.
Company also laid off nine senior executives
Media reports indicate that xAI has laid off more than 500 employees in just one month. The data annotation team, which previously had 1,500 people, has now dwindled to around 900. Furthermore, last week the company also laid off nine senior executives.
Pasini's journey to xAI has been quite interesting
Pasini's journey to xAI has been quite interesting. He won a hackathon competition in San Francisco, after which he became known to the company and became part of the team. Previously, Pasini held a fellowship at the investment firm Contrary and also studied at the prestigious Pingry School in New Jersey.
Accounts of 2 company employees were suspended
Elon Musk recently began following Pasini on social media. According to reports, when two company employees questioned his qualifications, their accounts were suspended within hours. This is a clear indication that Musk is expressing complete confidence in his young leader.
