Govt clarifies position on TikTok's return to India, what Ashwini Vaishnaw said?
TikTok Return: For the past few days, there was a discussion on social media that the short video platform TikTok could return to India. Especially when many users claimed that they were able to access the homepage of TikTok's official website. Also, the recent warmth in India-China relations further fueled these speculations. But now the central government has clarified its position on this.
Union IT and Information Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in a conversation with the media, "There is no proposal to lift the ban on TikTok. Neither the government nor any other party has received any request on this subject." With this statement, the speculation about the possible return of TikTok has come to an end for the time being.
At present, it is clear from the government's statement that the possibility of TikTok's return to India is far-fetched. However, changing geopolitical conditions and new agreements in the technology sector may change the picture in the future.
TikTok was banned 5 years ago
About five years ago, after the tension with China increased on the border, the Indian government banned many Chinese apps including TikTok citing security reasons. TikTok was also among the apps that were blocked in the first order.
The government had said at that time that these apps are a threat to India's sovereignty, unity, security and law and order. Apart from TikTok, other apps of Bytedance like Helo and CapCut were also banned.
TikTok banned in America too
TikTok has been banned not only in India but also in America. The US administration called this app a threat to national security. However, the government there has laid down a condition that if an American company or person buys this app, only then will it be allowed to operate.
The US President had recently said that American buyers are interested in buying TikTok. It is clear from this that the controversy over TikTok is not limited to India only, but its effect is being seen globally.
