A stampede broke out at actor Vijay's rally in Namakkal, Karur, Tamil Nadu. According to reports, at least 30 people died in the accident, including several children. More than 30 people were injured.
The incident occurred at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway, where thousands had gathered for Vijay’s ‘Velicham Veliyeru’ ('Let There Be Light') campaign meeting. He was addressing the audience when chaos broke out, forcing him to halt his speech.
Vijay appealed to the people to maintain peace
It is reported that the crowd had become so large that it became difficult for people to breathe. Suddenly, people and workers present there began to faint. Following this, actor Vijay appealed to the people to maintain peace. He requested his party workers to help those in need and take them to ambulances.

Eyewitnesses said the trouble began around 7.45 pm when large sections of the crowd, eager to catch a glimpse of Vijay, surged towards the stage barricades. Several people fainted in the suffocating rush.

In the melee, children were separated from their families, and many were trampled before volunteers and police could intervene. Live television footage showed Vijay pausing his speech, distributing water bottles to fainting supporters, and requesting police help.
Actor Vijay launched his party on February 2nd. Subsequently, on August 22nd, he unveiled the party's flag and symbol. The Election Commission officially recognized his party as a political party on September 8th. Vijay has already announced that after entering politics, he will devote his full-time time to serving the people. "Thalapathy 69," scheduled for release on April 30, 2025, will be his last film.
PM Modi expresses grief
PM Narendra Modi condoled the loss of lives in the unfortunate incident during the political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. Modi emphasized that the nation stands in solidarity with the affected families and reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring necessary support and assistance.

“The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured.”
