Director-cinematographer Prem Sagar, son of “Ramayana” director Ramanand Sagar, passed away on Sunday morning at his residence here, his younger brother Moti Sagar said. He was 81. “He had been unwell for quite some time. He was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital for about three weeks.
Arun Govil, known for his role as Ram in the iconic television series "Ramayan," expressed his condolences over the passing of Prem Sagar, the son of renowned filmmaker Ramanand Sagar and father of producer Shiv Sagar. Govil reflected on Prem Sagar's major contributions to the industry, while fellow actor Sunil Lahiri, who portrayed Lakshman, described the news as shocking.
According to reports, Prem Sagar was receiving treatment at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, but his health was steadily declining. Doctors advised his family to take him home.
Sunil Lahiri took to social media platform X to share his grief, stating, "It is very shocking news that we have lost Prem Sagar ji, son of Ramanand Sagar ji of Ramayan. Om Shanti."
Arun Govil also paid tribute, saying, "Late Shri Ramanand Sagar's son and famous filmmaker Shri Prem Sagar brought the dignity, ideals, and teachings of Lord Shri Ram to the masses through the electronic medium in the form of the Ramayana TV serial."
He further expressed his sorrow, saying, "It is extremely sad for me to receive the news of his demise. I pray to Lord Shri Ram to grant a place to the departed soul at his lotus feet and provide strength to the bereaved family to bear this immense grief."

Prem Sagar was a prominent producer and cinematographer who continued the legacy of the Sagar family in Indian cinema and television. He honed his skills in photography and cinematography at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune.
In addition to his work on "Ramayan," Prem Sagar was known for producing films and TV serials such as "Charas," "Aankhen," "Alif Laila," and "Lalkar." He also authored his father Ramanand Sagar's autobiography, "An Epic Life: Ramanand Sagar, From Barsaat to Ramayan," highlighting the family's impact on the industry.
