Plot

For those who have followed cricket ardently know how Unmukt Chand’s victory in the 2012 U-19 World Cup ushered euphoria across India. For those who don't, this documentary by Raghav Khanna serves as perfect material to celebrate the triumphs and turbulent times of India’s once rising star.

Unmukt, once considered Indian cricket’s next big superstar after leading the nation to the 2012 Under-19 World Cup title with a match-winning century. But his career didn’t follow the path most expected. After early success with Delhi Daredevils and India A, he went to face rejection in domestic circuits and ultimately retired from Indian cricket at just 28.

In August 2021, Unmukt Chand announced his retirement from Indian cricket and decided to relocate to the USA, where he chose to pursue a career as a local player in the American cricket system. This move made him ineligible to represent India in international cricket and meant he would no longer be considered an Indian player in the IPL roster. Instead, Chand aimed to play for the American national team, marking a new chapter in his cricketing journey.

Since 2021, Unmukt Chand has been playing in the Minor League Cricket for the Silicon Valley Strikers. Additionally, he has been a part of the Los Angeles Knight Riders (LAKR) since the inaugural season of Major League Cricket in 2023, further establishing his presence in the growing American cricketing landscape.

Technical aspects

Raghav Khanna has hit it out of the park with the way he has presented Unmukt’s story. It begins with a young boy dreaming of becoming one of the top Indian players as he gets inspired by Sachin Tendulkar. Battling all hurdles coming his way, Unmukt enrolled himself in the best institute and pursued his dream.

After the phenomenal victory, he was heralded as the next Virat Kohli of India. In fact, he was a former teammate of Virat Kohli in the Delhi Ranji Trophy team in first-class cricket. Khanna has told the story in the most realistic way possible.

From his parents, relatives, coach and life partner narrating the tale, to his time in the US, and use of his old clips and match footage, he has made sure to incorporate all moments of his life. Neither has he glorified his success, nor has he shown his failure emotionally. All he has done is presented the fact as it is and left it to the audience to learn some most crucial lessons about second chances in life.

On the whole, Unbroken: The Unmukt Chand Story is a winner - on pitch, on screen too. Those who witnessed his victory would be glad to relive the experience, while those who didn’t, will get a chance to witness how things unfolded during one of the greatest episodes of Indian sports history. Watch it!
