Malayalam Actress Navya Nair: Everyone knows the famous actress of the Malayalam film industry, Navya Nair. Recently, she has come into the limelight due to a small, unintentional rule violation at Melbourne International Airport in Australia. She was on her way to attend the Onam celebrations of the Malayali Association held in Victoria, but she was unaware that a small jasmine (chameli) gajra carried in her handbag could cost her dearly.
Navya explained that her father had given her a jasmine gajra specifically for the Onam celebrations. He divided it into two parts and asked Navya to wear one from Kochi to Singapore. By the time she reached Singapore, the gajra had wilted, so she was advised to keep the other part in her handbag to wear at the Singapore airport. Unknowingly, Navya carried the gajra in her handbag and arrived in Australia with it.
Australian custom officials considered it a rule violation
But Australian custom officials considered it a rule violation and fined Navya 1,980 Australian dollars (about Rs 1.25 lakh). Navya admitted that she did not know that this was a rule violation, and it was not done intentionally. The officials directed her to deposit the fine within 28 days.
According to the Australian Border Force website, it is prohibited to bring plants, flowers and seeds into the country without a legal permit. Australia considers it risky because such plants and flowers can spread diseases or pests in the environment there. According to the rules, only those people can bring plants and flowers who have a valid permit for this. Also, there should not be any soil or other plant material attached to them.
