Piyush Goyal, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, spoke about the trade deal with the US in Germany and said, "We don't make deals when we feel pressured."
He made this comment during an event in Germany. Goyal explained, "We are in talks with the US, but we don't rush into agreements. We don't set deadlines or feel forced into making a deal."
He emphasized that India thinks about the long-term future and does not make quick decisions under duress. "If there are tariffs against us, we are looking for ways to deal with them," he added.
Goyal said that India is exploring new markets and aims to boost demand in its economy. He said he believes in India's potential as it has a strong infrastructure and a population of 1.4 billion people.
He said, "We know that in 20-25 years, we could become a $30 trillion economy, and we will negotiate with that future in mind. We want to make the best deal for our country."
Currently, the US has imposed an extra 25 percent tariff on goods coming from India, making the total tariff 50 percent. US President Donald Trump has called these increased tariffs a "punishment" for India's purchases of oil and weapons from Russia. In response, India's Foreign Ministry described this action as "unfair, unreasonable, and irrational."
