Hasin Jahan Explains Why She Seeks Increased Alimony from Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami Supreme Court Case: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is currently playing for Bengal in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy and is set to return to Team India soon. However, his personal life off the field is once again in the headlines.
Shami currently pays his wife Hasin Jahan Rs 4 lakh as alimony every month, but Hasin Jahan claims this amount is far less than her needs. She approached the Supreme Court regarding this matter, following which the court has now sought a response from both Shami and the West Bengal government within four weeks.
Separated in 2018
Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan were married in 2014. However, four years later, in 2018, their dispute escalated to the point where they separated. Following this, the Kolkata High Court ordered Shami to pay his wife Hasin Jahan Rs 4 lakh as alimony every month. But Hasin called this amount "inadequate" and demanded an increase.
She argued that Rs 4 lakh was too little considering Shami's income and lifestyle. She filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking an increase in the alimony to Rs 10 lakh per month.
What Supreme Court said?
While hearing Hasin Jahan's petition, the Supreme Court questioned, "Isn't Rs 4 lakh per month already too much?" However, the court has not yet issued a final decision in the matter and has sought responses from Shami and the West Bengal government within four weeks.
Rs 4 lakh is too little: Hasin Jahan
Following the court's latest order, Hasin Jahan told media, "Rs 4 lakh is too little considering the kind of luxurious life Shami lives. We had already demanded Rs 10 lakh per month seven years ago. Now, inflation has also increased significantly."
