Former Home Minister Shivraj Patil Passes Away
Senior Congress leader and former Home Minister Shivraj Patil has passed away.
His family said that Shivraj Patil had been ill. He was 90 years old. He breathed his last at his home in Latur at around 6:30 am.
Shivraj Patil, a native of Maharashtra, served as a Member of Parliament from Latur in Marathwada.
Shivraj Patil was among the few leaders in Indian politics who held many important positions during his long public life. He served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha and also held positions in various central ministries. The Congress Party has expressed deep condolences on his passing. Senior party leaders and workers have paid their humble tributes and expressed their condolences to his family.
Shivraj Patil ]was a two-time member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1973 to 1980. During this period, he served as the Deputy Speaker and Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
Subsequently, in 1980, Shivraj Patil was elected to the Seventh Lok Sabha. He subsequently won six consecutive Lok Sabha elections (1984, 1989, 1991, 1996, 1998, and 1999). During this period, he also held several Union Ministerial positions. He also served as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. This winning streak was broken in 2004 when he lost to BJP candidate Rupatai Patil Nilangekar.
A trusted face of the Congress
His contribution to national politics was remarkable. He was considered one of the trusted faces of the Congress Party. His calm nature and balanced approach were repeatedly praised by leaders from all political parties. He earned a science degree from Osmania University and studied law at the University of Mumbai.
He was appointed Home Minister in 2004, but resigned from his post after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. At the time, his move was considered an example of political dignity and responsibility.
Shivraj Patil had been battling a serious illness for the past few months. His condition had been steadily deteriorating, which is why he was kept under medical supervision at home instead of in the hospital. His health suddenly deteriorated Friday morning, and he breathed his last.
Rahul, Surjewala, PM Modi condole
LoP Rahul Gandhi said: The news of the passing of former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Shivraj Patil ji is extremely saddening and an irreparable loss to the party.
Rahul said, "His dedication to public service and his contributions to the nation will always be remembered. My condolences are with the entire Patil family, his well-wishers, and supporters in this hour of grief."
Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala wrote on Instagram, "Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of senior leader Shri Shivraj Patil ji. Humble condolences."
He further wrote, "Shivraj Patil ji, a seven-time MP, played an active role in the country's constitutional process, holding several prestigious positions in the Government of India, including Home Minister, Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Governor of Punjab, and others."
PM Modi said on his social media handle, "Saddened by the passing away of Shivraj Patil ji. He was a seasoned leader who served as an MLA, MP, Union Minister, Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, and Speaker of the Lok Sabha during his long public life. He had a deep passion for contributing to the welfare of society. I met him several times over the years, the most recent being when he visited my home a few months ago. My condolences to his family in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."
