Uttarakhand Governor returns UCC and anti-conversion amendment bills; what did CM Pushkar Singh Dhami say?
The Governor of Uttarakhand has returned two important bills sent by the state government.
Governor Lieutenant General (Retd.) Gurmit Singh returned the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the amendment bills related to the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion Act, citing technical flaws.
These drafts related to the UCC and the anti-conversion law will be sent back for approval after necessary corrections.
The state government claims that the Governor's office returned the bills due to minor discrepancies.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said, "Bills are sent by the government many times, which are then examined by the Governor's office. If any improvements are needed, they are returned for correction. After making the necessary changes, the bill is sent back to the Governor's office. These bills will also be corrected and sent back."
These two bills, related to religious conversion and the UCC, have been among the most ambitious initiatives of the BJP government led by Pushkar Singh Dhami.
The UCC was passed in January 2024, while the government introduced amendments to this law during the monsoon session of the assembly in August.
The state already has an anti-conversion law in place since 2018, which the government amended in 2022 and then again in 2025.
