What did Priyanka Gandhi say about renaming MNREGA?
Amidst discussions about renaming the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi has raised questions about it.
She said that such actions "waste government resources and cost money." However, the government has not yet issued any official statement regarding the renaming of MGNREGA.
Some media reports claimed that a decision to rename MNREGA was taken in a cabinet meeting held on Friday. According to the reports, MNREGA will now be renamed 'Pujya Bapu Gramin Rozgar Yojana'.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said, "I cannot understand what the mentality behind this is? Because it has Mahatma Gandhi's name in it."
She added, "Secondly, whenever a name is changed, government resources are wasted again. Because everything has to be renamed, all the offices are renamed, everything has to be renamed, so it's a big exercise, which also costs money."
The MNREGA scheme was introduced in 2005 as the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, which was changed to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in 2009. Its objective was to guarantee 100 days of employment to rural families every year.
