Magh Mela Prayagraj 2026: Faith Flows at Sangam as Magh Mela Begins in Prayagraj
Magh Mela Prayagraj 2026: The annual Magh Mela has commenced on the banks of the sacred Triveni Sangam, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country. The month-long religious congregation, held during the Hindu month of Magh (January–February), is considered one of the most spiritually significant events in the Indian religious calendar.
From the early hours of the morning, pilgrims were seen taking a holy dip at the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati—believed to cleanse sins and pave the way for spiritual liberation. Saints, seers, and Kalpavasis (devotees who live an austere life on the riverbanks for the entire month) have begun their annual stay in temporary camps set up across the floodplains.
The district administration has made extensive arrangements to ensure smooth conduct of the Mela. Temporary pontoon bridges, medical camps, clean drinking water facilities, sanitation units, and round-the-clock security have been deployed. Special attention has been given to crowd management and traffic regulation, especially on auspicious bathing days such as Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, and Maghi Purnima.
Officials said that CCTV surveillance, river patrol teams, and disaster response units are in place to prevent untoward incidents. Health teams have also been stationed to provide immediate medical assistance to elderly pilgrims and Kalpavasis.
Unlike the Kumbh Mela, which is held once every 12 years, the Magh Mela is an annual event that reflects the enduring tradition of faith, simplicity, and devotion. The Mela also serves as a platform for spiritual discourses, devotional music, yoga sessions, and cultural programmes that highlight India’s rich religious heritage.
Local markets selling religious items, traditional food, and handicrafts have added vibrancy to the Mela area, providing livelihood opportunities to thousands of vendors and artisans.
Authorities estimate that several crore pilgrims will visit Prayagraj over the course of the Magh Mela this year. With favourable weather and improved infrastructure, the turnout is expected to be higher than previous years.
The Magh Mela will continue until Maghi Purnima, concluding with the final ceremonial bath, marking the culmination of weeks of devotion, discipline, and spiritual reflection.
