Over dozen people fall ill after drinking contaminated water in Mhow; two more succumb in Bhagirathpura Indore
More than two dozen people have reportedly fallen ill after drinking contaminated water in Mhow, a town in the Indore district of Madhya Pradesh. The affected persons are experiencing vomiting and diarrhea.
Nine people who fell ill after drinking the contaminated water are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Several other patients are being treated at home.
Usha Thakur, the BJP MLA from Mhow, visited the patients. She stated that the problem in the area is that people have illegally connected their water lines to the drainage system.
She said, "The CEO of the cantonment board has been instructed to lay new water lines and provide connections from above ground. It appears that this is the initial cause of the water contamination, and a permanent solution will be implemented."
Meanwhile, Indore Collector Shivam Verma arrived in Mhow late Thursday night and inquired about the condition of the patients admitted to the hospital.
Shivam Verma said that complaints had been received about some people suffering from jaundice. According to him, the administration immediately arranged for medical treatment for all those affected.
He added that six children have currently been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
According to Indore Collector Shivam Verma, a survey was launched in the area on Friday morning. The survey is identifying people experiencing vomiting or diarrhea.
Shivam Verma said that several patients are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, and the administration is continuously monitoring the situation.
He has instructed the health department to provide proper treatment to all patients and directed the Mhow Cantonment Board to test the water and maintain sanitation.
Two more deaths in Bhagirathpura, toll reaches 27
Meanwhile, two more deaths due to contaminated water were reported on Friday in Bhagirathpura, Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Badrilal Prasad, 63, was admitted to Arvind Hospital in Indore on January 17 after experiencing vomiting and diarrhea.
It is reported that Badrilal Prasad also suffered from tuberculosis. He passed away on Friday. This brings the death toll in the Bhagirathpura area to 26. Ten people who fell ill after drinking contaminated water are still admitted to Arvind Hospital.
His son Shailendra said that he was admitted to MY Hospital on January 4th due to vomiting and diarrhea. He was discharged after four days. On January 17th, his condition worsened, and he was taken to Aurobindo Hospital. He died on Friday afternoon.
The son says that they have not yet received any help from the administration, so they have not performed the last rites. They will protest by placing the body in front of the Bhagirathpura police outpost on Saturday.
Elderly woman succumbs
Later an elderly woman also succumbed. Vidya Bai (82), a resident of Bhagirathpura, passed away on Frisay. Her son said, "My mother had been suffering from vomiting and diarrhea since January 10th. She was being treated at home. On Tuesday, due to increased weakness, she fell while going to the bathroom."
Due to her advanced age and weakness, surgery was not possible. So we brought her home. When her condition worsened again on Thursday night, we took her to Aurobindo Hospital, where she died two hours later."
With Vidya Bai's death, the death toll from contaminated water in Indore has reached 27.
Currently, 10 people are admitted to Aurobindo Hospital. One patient is on a ventilator. According to the health department, 8 of the admitted patients are also suffering from other illnesses.
