Canada: At least 10 people killed in shooting targeting school
At least 10 people, including the shooter, have been killed and several others injured in a mass shooting in British Columbia, Canada, police said.
According to local media, the incident occurred on Tuesday (local time) at a school in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), six people were found dead inside the high school. Another person died on the way to the hospital. Police say the suspected shooter was also found dead. Police say he died of self-inflicted injuries. This information was reported by Canada's leading media outlet, CBC.
In addition, two bodies were found in a house. Police believe this house is connected to the shooting. All those injured in the incident were given first aid and taken to the hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
MLA Larry Neufeld expressed deep sorrow over the incident. In a post on X, he said, "I am closely monitoring the situation in Tumbler Ridge following the tragic and deeply disturbing incident at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School." He stated that police have confirmed that multiple people have been killed. He added that the active shooter alert has been lifted, but the investigation is ongoing.
Neufeld continued, "I want to thank the first responders, school staff, and local authorities for their swift and professional response to this very difficult situation. My prayers are with the students, families, teachers, and the entire Tumbler Ridge community. This is a small and close-knit town, where the impact of such an incident is felt by everyone."
He added, "Out of respect for those affected, it is important that we give the police the necessary time to complete their investigation and confirm the details. I will continue to share verified information as soon as it becomes available."
The MLA also said that anyone experiencing mental or emotional distress following the incident could contact him. Meanwhile, police said the motive for the shooting is still under investigation. No additional information has been released about the suspect, who is the shooter, and further information is awaited.
