Laxity in AI adoption cannot be tolerated
In his virtual address, he stated that laxity in AI adoption cannot be tolerated. This is not solely the government's responsibility, but a collective effort as part of "Team India." The private sector, academics, and policymakers must all work together.
He specifically emphasized the need to strengthen basic education, develop high-quality skills, expand labor-intensive service sectors, and reduce unnecessary regulations and barriers. He believes that only if skills and technology advance together will the country truly benefit.
Window of opportunity is currently open
Nageswaran also stated that the window of opportunity is currently open, but it won't remain open forever. Therefore, immediate action is essential. According to him, this isn't just a debate about future jobs, but a question of India's future development and social balance.
A significant skills gap persists
Nageswaran said with accurate forecasting, strong institutional discipline, and consistent, effective implementation, India can become the first major country in the world where humans and technology together exemplify widespread prosperity. He also pointed out the current state of the country. Millions of jobs are being created every year, but a significant skills gap persists. Very few people receive formal skill training.
Problem will not be solved on its own
He called this a "structural weakness" that needs to be addressed soon. He said this problem will not be solved on its own. It requires urgency, political will, strong administrative capacity, and a clear commitment to adopting technology along with employable skills on a large scale.
This address was delivered during a session on "The Future of Employment in the AI Age." The AI Summit, being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from February 16 to 20, is being attended by global leaders, technology companies, and experts. Its aim is to discuss the responsible and inclusive use of AI.
