Innovative Initiative of South Panna Forest Division: How Cow Shelters Are Becoming "Vulture-Friendly" for Vulture Conservation
Cow shelters (Gaushalas) operating under the South Panna Forest Division in MP are now establishing their unique identity as completely "vulture-friendly." Reiterating their commitment to the conservation of vultures, the vigilant guardians of the ecosystem, these cowsheds have developed a model system that utilizes only environmentally friendly methods in the treatment and management of cattle. This initiative, conducted in coordination with the Forest Department, ensures that no activity that could endanger the lives of vultures occurs while caring for all the cows and other livestock residing within the cowshed premises.
The use of drugs considered lethal to vultures has been completely banned in these "vulture-friendly" cowsheds. The use of Diclofenac (Dynapar), banned since 2008, as well as drugs banned in recent years such as Aceclofenac, Ketoprofen, and Nimesulide, is strictly prohibited here. Currently, these centers prioritize only vulture-safe drugs such as Meloxicam and Tolfenamic acid when medically necessary. This entire process is carried out under the strict supervision of registered veterinarians, ensuring that no harmful drug residue remains in the carcasses of dead cattle and that vultures are provided with safe food.
This conservation initiative is not limited to treatment alone; it is also taking the form of a comprehensive public awareness campaign. The cowshed management regularly educates villagers and cow-helpers about the importance of vultures and the benefits of safe drugs. This transparent system of self-certification has further strengthened the responsibility of cow shelter operators. By actively participating in the Forest Department's conservation efforts, these cow shelters not only remain centers of animal welfare but also play a crucial role in the conservation of biodiversity.
