Union Budget 2026: Income tax slabs unchanged: 3 Ayurvedic AIIMS and 7 high-speed rail corridors proposed; cancer medicines to be duty-free

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget-22026 on Sunday. ​​New announcements included ease of tax filing, railway projects, and Ayurvedic AIIMS.

Major Announcements

No changes to income tax slabs. An additional 3 months have been given for filing revised returns. This means revised returns can now be filed until March 31st instead of December 31st.

Import duty removed on 17 cancer medicines. Medicines for 7 rare diseases will also be duty-free.

Announcement of the opening of 3 Ayurvedic AIIMS.

7 high-speed rail corridors announced. These include Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi, and Varanasi-Siliguri.

Rs 12.2 lakh crore announced for the development of Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities with a population of more than 5 lakh.

Content creator labs will be set up in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges.

Hostels for girls will be built in approximately 800 districts. One hostel will be built in each district.
